Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited (MKCL), set up under the Companies Act 1956 and headquartered in Pune, began operations in April 2002 with backing from the Department of Higher and Technical Education, Government of Maharashtra. The company's core focus is bringing information technology into education in a more integrated, universal way, offering print-based and CD-based self-study, web-based collaborative e-learning, and classroom-based learning. Its product and service range covers infrastructure development, e-content creation, educational and general e-governance, e-learning technology, learning-management systems and online assessment systems. Original equity investors include the Government of Maharashtra, eleven state universities, and a mix of educational, community, IT and non-IT organisations. MKCL's channel-partner network of Authorised Learning Centres has been set up by small and medium IT businesses and educational institutions across Maharashtra, spanning metropolitan, urban, semi-urban, rural, tribal and mountainous districts.
